The Nepal Teachers' Federation has staged a sit-in at the party office of CPN (Maoist Center) Paris Danda, demanding the amendment of the proposed school education bill.

According to the previous agreement between the federation and the government, the federation sat on a dharna at the Maoist party office as part of the first phase of the protest, demanding that the education bill be amended. Laxmikishore Subedi, president of the Federation, informed that they started the agitation to pressurize the demands of the Federation to be addressed in the Education Bill, which was passed by the Parliamentary Committee and reached the House of Representatives.

In order to improve public education, the federation has said that there is no option to address the demands made by the teaching staff and the Nepal Teachers' Federation. The federation will continue the sit-in program until August 20. There is a sit-in program on August 13th at the local levels across the country and on August 15th at the district education unit.

The Federation has put forward a demand that internal competition should be 75 percent and open 25 percent for temporary teacher posts. However, the committee has sent the bill to the House of Representatives with a provision of 60 percent internal and 40 percent open. The federation protested that the positions and salaries of school employees were not guaranteed and the positions and service facilities of children's class teachers were not fixed, the service of institutional school teachers and an impractical transfer system were introduced.

The School Education Bill was passed by the Education, Health and Technology Committee of the House of Representatives on August 5. MPs from the main opposition CPN (Maoist Centre), National Independent Party and National Democratic Party have different views on the bill.
