Former Minister of Education and Member of the House of Representatives from RSVP, Sumana Shrestha, has said that the matter of the ruling parties seeking a share in the appointment of Dean and Campus Head of Tribhuvan University is an unforgivable crime.

He said that Nepal's higher education is unable to produce skilled manpower because there is party division even in the academic sector, which should be appointed on the basis of merit and ability.

Marxist Knowledge Center organized on Tuesday 'Corruption in Nepal: Speaking in a virtual interaction about 'Challenges and Control Efforts', Shrestha said that the reform of higher education will not be possible until political party interference in the university is stopped. He alleged that the political parties themselves are trying to spread chaos by mobilizing student organizations to keep people from their own parties without looking at academic competence in the field of producing conscious and skilled manpower.

He said that he struggled a lot during his tenure to establish meritocracy in higher education, but the current government is once again threatening the leadership of the university to make its cadre recruitment center.

It has been seen that the accountability of the person appointed by the party is only towards the party, the quality of the institution and the welfare of the students are not prioritized. Since teaching is a very respected profession, it should not be seen through the eyes of political parties, but on the basis of ability and excellence.'

MP Shrestha said, "We should oppose the work of making fun of meritocracy instead of implementing the report of the committee formed to improve the situation." She claimed that while she was in the Ministry of Education, the officials were selected on the basis of excellence by creating new procedures in the Tertiary Service Commission and various universities. "I am adamant about removing the appointment based on the setting, but I have worked to remove the political partisanship. Removing partisanship in education is my main agenda,"  She said.
