At least nine people have been killed in an avalanche in Chitral district of Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, officials said. One child was rescued alive from the avalanche, officials said.

The incident took place in the mountainous region of the district, where an avalanche following heavy snowfall buried a family of 10 under snow and debris, Xinhua quoted rescue spokesman Bilal Faizil as saying.

The heavy snowfall and extreme weather conditions have significantly increased the risk of avalanches and other incidents in the mountainous regions, and residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and remain vigilant, he said.

He confirmed that rescue teams have been put on high alert as adverse weather conditions persist in the region.
