An official of the fire department said on Sunday that the initial investigation of the fire in the building in Gulzar House in Hyderabad, in which at least 17 people died, was caused by a short circuit.
"Preliminary investigations indicate that the cause was short circuit", said Y Nagi Reddy, Director General of Telangana Disaster Response and Fire Services.
There was a fire incident in Krishna Pearls shop and residential complex in Gulzar House area.
According to Reddy, the fire department received the call at 6:16 am local time and dispatched 11 fire engines with sufficient personnel at 6:17 am. The fire department used breathing apparatus and oxygen masks to save people.
'According to the information received, the lives of 17 people could not be saved... preliminary tests show that short circuit is the cause', he said.
'There was no shortage in the fire department to put out the fire and rescue people . The building had only one entrance, two meters long, like a tunnel. There is only one staircase of one meter to reach the first and second floor. This made escape and rescue operations very difficult. The fire was brought under control around 9 am. There were a total of 21 people inside the building. Cause of death is smoke inhalation; None had burn injuries. Fire official said.
The list of 17 dead issued by the Telangana Fire Disaster Response Emergency and Civil Defense includes the names of eight children under the age of 10 years.
Chief Minister A Revant Reddy expressed deep grief over the accident and directed the top officials to take all necessary measures to save the families trapped in the fire incident. He issued orders to shift the injured to nearby hospitals and provide good medical treatment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed 'deep sorrow' for those who lost their lives in the fire. According to the Prime Minister's Office, he announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh (Indian Rupees) from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those injured in the accident.
