The search and rescue operation for 17 people who went missing while searching for mushrooms in Shuklaphanta National Park and the surrounding forests in Kanchanpur is ongoing. Police have said that they were contacted by telephone on Monday morning with three women from Beldandi among the missing.
14 people from Bhimdatta Municipality-19, Bagphanta Dasharathtol had gone to search for mushrooms inside Shuklaphanta National Park at around 11 am on Sunday. After they did not come in contact till late, a joint team of Nepal Police, Nepal Army and locals had started a search operation since last night. After they did not come in contact till Monday morning, the search operation is continuing, according to Kanchanpur police.
Three women from Chavanni, Beldandi Rural Municipality-2 were contacted by telephone on Monday morning, informed Police Inspector Jay Parki of the Area Police Office, Beldandi. According to him, Manju Chhetri, Laxmi Thapa Magar and Sita Chaudhary have stayed in the park area overnight. They informed that they are safe under a Simal tree. But since they could not give a precise location, the rescue team has intensified their search in the possible areas, said Police Inspector Parki.
A Nepal Police team from Beldandi, a Nepali Army team from Ransingh Dal Battalion (A) Gulma Beldandi, and locals have jointly deployed in the rescue operation. The search operation has also become complicated as mobile network is available only in some places within the park area.
Three policemen have been mobilized from Bagphanta Police Post under the command of Senior Constable Premraj Joshi, and seven policemen have been mobilized from Kanchanpur District Police Office under the command of Deputy Superintendent of Police Tek Bahadur Rawat.
Similarly, 15 people from Ransingh Dal Gulma Majhagaun, 18 Nepali Army personnel from Malumela Post, and locals have also been deployed in the search operation. Deputy Superintendent of Police Tek Bahadur Rawat informed that no contact has been made with the 14 people from Bagphanta so far.
The police have urged people not to go to the forest area of Shuklaphanta National Park for any purpose during the rainy season, not to be separated from the group when going to other community forests, not to enter the forest without adequate preparation, and to go to the forest only with the information of the security agencies or the forest office, as far as possible.
