The locals of Paldi and Lekgaun in Pancheshwor Rural Municipality of Baitadi, who were forced to carry 40-liter jugs of water on their backs for three hours, are happy that drinking water has started flowing into their homes and courtyards.

Since there was no water source nearby in these two villages, they were forced to walk uphill and downhill for three hours to fetch water in jugs. They also used to collect rainwater in plastic drums and ponds.

The water was brought through a pipe from a distance of about 2,149 meters at a cost of 131 lakh rupees, including 80 lakh 39 thousand 657 rupees from Finland/European Union, 36 lakh 14 thousand 5 hundred 31 rupees from Pancheshwor Rural Municipality, and 14 lakh 45 thousand 8 hundred 12 rupees from the Government of Nepal, said Gorakh Sarki, chairman of the Patalek Paldi Dhura Solar Lift Drinking Water Scheme.

102 taps have been installed in the settlement now. With water flowing in the taps 24 hours a day, locals have been able to fill their own water in their own courtyards. ‘Now our days of misery are gone, now that we have water at home, we can bathe, wash and drink as much as we want,’ said local Bhana Sarki, ‘We have been relieved of the compulsion to carry water jugs on our backs for three hours a day, walking up and down.’

‘There was a water problem in sensitive offices like health, where sanitation is done. Now, it has become easier with the availability of water,’ said Pancheshwor Health Post Chief Suresh Sarki, ‘There was also a compulsion to carry water in the health office, now that has gone.’

There are 98 households, one school, one health post, a cooperative and a ward office in Paldi Lek village. Rural Municipality Chairman Gorakh Bahadur Chand said that the drinking water project has provided many facilities to the locals. He said that it was difficult to manage drinking water in Paldi and Lek villages, which did not have a water source, and it has become easier with the lift drinking water.

Now, every local has a drinking water tap in their yard. Meters have been installed in each tap. In many other places in the rural municipality, water sources have dried up and problems have arisen, and a new plan is being developed along with a plan to find new water sources.

After the water supply reached the homes of Paldi and Lek villages, the locals were happy and held an inauguration program and welcomed the employees and people's representatives with music and thanked them, said committee chairman Sarki.
