Kanchanpur Prison has more prisoners than its capacity. The physical infrastructure of the prison, which was built in 2025 BS, has not been expanded, but the number of prisoners has been increasing every year.
Kanchanpur Prison has the capacity to comfortably and systematically house 140 male and 20 female prisoners. According to the daily statistics of the Prison Office, there are 350 prisoners in the prison, more than double its capacity. Out of which, 336 male prisoners, including 7 foreign prisoners and 5 foreign detainees, are incarcerated. Similarly, there are 14 female prisoners, including 1 foreign prisoner and 13 detainees.
As the prison's capacity has increased, disputes have flared up between them, leading to an increase in incidents of group fights and beatings. Since the month of Magh alone, there have been two incidents of clashes and beatings between prisoners due to internal disputes. The last incident on Chaitra 24 injured 5 prisoners. The prison administration has stated that the situation inside the prison is normal after 3 of the injured were transferred to other prisons outside the district.
According to Kanchanpur Prison Chief Jailer Hemanti Saud, 457 prisoners, including 28 Indians, escaped from here on Bhadra 24 during the Genji movement. Out of which, 92, including 17 Indians, have not been contacted yet.
There are also significant numbers of prisoners with drug-related offenses in the prison
Jailer Saud said that in recent years, the number of prisoners with drug-related offenses has increased along with various types of criminal incidents, and security challenges have also increased along with the management of the prison. According to her, there has been a significant presence of drug-related prisoners in the prison. According to the prison's April 14 prisoner details, out of the 350 prisoners in the prison, 127 are drug-related.
'On the one hand, the physical infrastructure of the prison has not been added, but the number of prisoners has been added,' said Jailer Saud, 'On top of that, the pressure of drug-related prisoners has increased, which has created problems in prisoner management.' According to her, the prison itself is also a reformatory. Therefore, prisoners for drug and other crimes are treated differently. 'Prisoners with drug addiction need a different system for medical consultation and treatment,' she said.
Informing that she has been holding the post of jailer for the first time for only 3 months, she said, "The only work done is to imprison those involved in crimes, including drug addicts, and no initiative was taken to improve their condition after imprisonment." She said that it is difficult to manage prisoners who are also drug addicts themselves, and the main reason for the fights and beatings that occur in the prison at different times is the inability to properly manage drug prisoners.
According to Jailer Saud, there is a need for a separate system to keep drug prisoners and detainees in each province. "In addition, the current capacity of the prison needs to be expanded in a systematic and modern way and the prison needs to be developed as a reformatory," Jailer Saud said, "The DPR was prepared last year for the expansion of the physical infrastructure of Kanchanpur Prison, but further construction work has not started yet."
