The Veterinary Hospital and Animal Service Expert Center in Patan, Baitadi has been without a veterinarian for one and a half years.
Due to the lack of a veterinarian at the veterinary hospital, specific diseases seen in animals have not been identified. Although there is a vacancy for one animal service doctor at the expert center, the Sudurpaschim Provincial Government has not been able to fill the position.
The veterinary hospital has been without a veterinarian for one and a half years after the veterinarians on contract withdrew their names for permanent service and went elsewhere, said Gumani Dutta Pant, acting chief of the Veterinary Hospital and Animal Service Expert Center, Patan, Baitadi.
‘If any such epidemic occurs in the livestock of farmers in the district, we are forced to bring a veterinarian from Dadeldhura for treatment,’ he said, ‘Since the doctor left till today, no such epidemic has been seen in the district.’
A few days ago, a leopard cub was injured in the forest of Sigas Rural Municipality, and a veterinarian was called from Dadeldhura to treat it, as the veterinary hospital was not available in Patan, said Bhaktaraj Giri, Chief of the Division Forest Office, Baitadi.
The Ministry of Land Management and Agricultural Cooperatives of the Sudurpaschim Province government has not been able to fill the position despite the absence of a veterinarian at the expert center for a year.
The expert center has not been able to provide specialist services related to animal health. Chief Panta said that animal health services such as identification and diagnosis of animal diseases, health certification, lab, surgery, and diagnosis have been affected.
