Kawani's hill in Chure near Musetti, Bhimdatta Municipality-9. On the other side, Purnagiri Mata temple in Champawat district of Uttarakhand. In the middle, the Mahakali river. The Mahakali is flowing peacefully between Kawani and Purnagiri.
On the bank of the same river where the river flows peacefully, rappelling guide Kishan Bhat was explaining the code of conduct to the raptors. He informed them about the precautions to be taken and the things not to do while rappelling. Everyone was wearing live jackets, helmets and also holding paddles in their hands. Guide Bhat also informed them about all of that.
After the guide gave all the information, everyone started rappelling in the Mahakali with the necessary preparations. Everyone moved forward, cutting the water with paddles in their hands. After a while of calm water near the river, everything started flowing with the water.
A similar scene was seen on Monday in Bhimdatta Municipality-9, Khalla Musetti. At least 40 people took an adventurous rafting trip in 5 rafting boats. Rafting has been started commercially in the area since Monday. Rafting has been started regularly in collaboration with Bhimdatta Municipality, Nepal Tourism Board and others at the initiative of NGO Needs Nepal.
Mahakali is a border river. There are many issues related to the sharing of water in the border river. Indian businessmen have been regularly rafting on the other side of Bhimdatta Municipality-9. It is not that there have been no efforts for rafting on the Nepal side either. Organizations and local levels have been trying since 2077. Although it was only a trial run in the past, this time it has been started professionally, said Bhat, a rafting guide.
‘Now, rafting will be done regularly until the monsoon starts,’ he said, ‘We have done everything from training to practice in this area, and after a lot of hard work, we have been able to start rafting in this area.’ He said that young people have been able to start rafting professionally on the Mahakali River after taking training as guides at the local level. Three people including him have already reached various areas and practiced along with the training as rafting guides.
On Monday, the rafting was launched in the presence of Nepal Tourism Board member Narendra Dev Bhatt, Bhimdatta Municipality Mayor Padam Bogati, Dodhara Chandani Municipality Mayor Kishore Kumar Limbu, and other public representatives and locals. Guide Bhat said that more than a dozen rafting packages were sold at the launch.
Bhimdatta Municipality-9 Musetti is about 3 kilometers away from Khalla. It takes 15 minutes to half an hour to raft over that distance. This area offers views ranging from rafting to the quiet flow of the river. Therefore, it is not very difficult to raft here.
‘Mahakali is a border river, our presence is also necessary in it, for that it seems appropriate to start rafting,’ said Narendradev Bhatt, a member of the Nepal Tourism Board. ‘The tourism board will come up with a special plan to promote rafting here. I have planned to organize a Nepal-India rafting competition next year.’ He said that along with the competition, celebrities will also be brought in to promote it by having them raft.
‘There is a very good potential for rafting tourism here, for which the municipality is working on the development of physical infrastructure,’ said Padam Bogati, the mayor of Bhimdatta Municipality. ‘The municipality is also working on road construction.’ He said that since the development of physical infrastructure is not possible with the municipality’s budget alone, the support of the provincial and federal governments is also necessary.
Two packages have been prepared for short and long-distance rafting, from Musetti to Khalla and from Parshuram to Khalla in Dadeldhura’s Parshuram Municipality. Since rafting is regularly operating on the Indian side, if it can be operated regularly and properly on the Nepal side as well, it is expected that employment and income generation will improve at the local level.
