A businessman has been using the public toilet in the border Julaghat market for personal use and locking it.
Dasharathchand Municipality built a two-room toilet in Julaghat market, where more than 30 jeeps ply daily and hundreds of passengers congregate, a decade ago. Locals said that local businessman Raghubir Thapa has been locking the public toilet in Julaghat market for the past two to three years. Passengers and other traders have complained that Thapa has been locking the toilet and keeping the key with him, causing problems. Even though locals have been asking businessman Thapa to use it, passengers have been defecating in the open.
Jeep businessman Sushil Chhetri said that they have to ask businessman Thapa for the key to use the toilet and are forced to defecate on the roadside on days when Thapa's shop is closed.
‘We only ask for it because we know that businessman Thapa has the key to the toilet because we regularly visit this place,’ he said. ‘New people defecate in the open after seeing the lock.’
People from across the Mahakali River come to this market to shop. The businessman Thapa said that he locks the toilet in front of his shop because it is dirty.
The municipality had also built another toilet in Julaghat market. The toilet has now been covered with mud when the road to Sera was built.
Jeep businessman Chhetri said that the municipality has not paid any attention to the toilet management when he informed it from time to time. Mayor Pushkar Raj Joshi said that despite complaints about the public toilet in Julaghat, it has not been built yet because there is no place to build a new one.
