The deposits of seven candidates, including the son of former Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand, who failed to secure 10 percent of the valid votes cast in Baitadi under the House of Representatives election, have been confiscated.

Out of 72,843 votes cast in Baitadi in the House of Representatives election, 5,113 votes were invalidated. Naresh Dayal, Information Officer of the District Election Office, Baitadi, informed that the deposits of candidates who did not secure 10 percent of the valid votes cast were confiscated.

Those whose deposits were confiscated in this way are Bhupen Bahadur Chand of the RPP, the son of the former Prime Minister, Ram Bahadur Kunwar of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), An Singh Bhandari of the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal, Nawaraj Koirala of the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, Bishan Singh Bohara of the Aam Janata Party, Gajendra Raj Pandey of the Shram Sanskriti Party and independent candidate Jaya Prakash Pant.

According to the final results released on Sunday, Harimohan Bhandari of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSWP) has won in Baitadi by securing 22,134 votes. His nearest rival Chatur Bahadur Chand of the Nepali Congress got 18,194 votes and CPN-UML candidate Damodar Bhandari got 17,091 votes. Similarly, Parmananda Bhatta of the Nepali Communist Party got 6,965 votes.

According to Section 71(1) of the Election Act of the House of Representatives, 2074 BS, under the first-past-the-post system, the deposit of a candidate who secures less than 10 percent of the total votes cast will be forfeited.
