Independent candidates from Baitadi are seeking votes from home.

What you should know

There are 11 candidates in the single constituency of Baitadi for the House of Representatives elections. 10 are from political parties and one, Jayaprakash Pant, is an independent candidate.

While all the candidates are busy with their door-to-door campaigns, independent candidate Panta is sitting at home and writing poems and short stories on Facebook and asking for votes over the phone. He said that he did not ask for votes at people's homes to end the recent practice of winning elections by ostentatious means and to send a message that elections can be contested without investment. He believes that voters are now aware. 'The people have known and understood me for a long time. I don't need to go out to ask for votes,' he said. 'The people have stopped liking the ostentatious acts of parties and leaders. But the leaders have not been able to understand.' He is asking for votes through his Facebook. He can also be seen asking for votes in a message-oriented way in the poems and short stories he posted on Facebook. He has said that he will not go to voters' homes, use vehicles, use public platforms, or use pamphlets during the election period. ‘This is an attempt to send a message that even a landless person with financial constraints can contest elections, ending the recent practice that only people with money can contest elections,’ Pant said.

He said that he is a candidate to work independently on the issues of the people, abandoning party politics. He called for fair competition, not competition with party candidates.

Independent candidate Pant does not ask for votes even when he meets him, said Teksingh Kunwar, a tea shop owner in Dasharathchand Municipality-4 Gadi. ‘When many people drink tea with Pant in my shop, and others ask if you are also a candidate, he only replies that I am also a candidate,’ Kunwar said, ‘But I do not hear him ask me to vote for him too.’

Pant, who has been in RPP politics, said that he has been independently involved in social work for a year after leaving the party.
