Flood victims of Ramaroshan-5, Saini in the district have been waiting for relief and rehabilitation for years. The rehabilitation of those who lost their homes, businesses and relatives in the floods four years ago is not a priority for the state.

The flood of Kailash Khola on the night of 2078 Bhadra 2 had washed away 22 out of 25 houses in Saini Bazaar. At that time, 17 people from four families went missing. Only seven bodies of them were found. The remaining 10 are still missing.

This market was the former commercial center of Ramaroshan and Bhatakatia VDCs. After the increase in trade, the locals had built houses and shops by investing lakhs of rupees. Even though the flood destroyed everything, the state did not restore it.

After the incident, some organizations had provided food and clothes. Apart from that, the presence of government agencies was almost zero, said local Dirgharaj Rokaya. He said that even now, candidates of various political parties come here and assure relief and rehabilitation.

‘We become voters only when elections come.’ At other times, they ignore us,' he said, 'We have been living in a hurry for four years. A single day of flood devastated the market, and we felt helpless. Even after all this, we did not feel like a state.' Only the shops of Rokaya and Khadak Batala are left in Saini Bazaar. The flood displaced about 250 families from the market.

Rokaya said that Dhanesalla, Sodna Jat Tola and other settlements are still at high risk of floods and landslides. '17 people have lost their lives, property has been washed away, we have not received any relief yet,' he said, 'As the elections approach, leaders come to ask for votes. How long will we be just a vote bank?'

80-year-old Jhankar Saud and 75-year-old wife Surja Saud of Ramaroshan-5, Sanani are waiting for relief. He said that the flood in Kailash River had destroyed all their dreams, hopes and trust. The flood took the lives of six people, including his son Nandu Saud. ‘We are now living by wiping each other’s tears. There is no one in the family,’ said Jhankar, ‘They took us to the polling station with the promise of providing relief in the 2079 elections. After that, no one returned.’

They lamented that leaders used to come to seek votes only when elections were coming, but no one was given priority during disasters. Surja said that she received Rs 6 lakh as relief from the government after her children were taken away by the flood. ‘We had taken Rs 6 lakh as relief for the lives of six people, but no one else has given anything. How will we repay the loan? How will we make a living? Day and night go by while thinking,’ she says. ‘Our situation has become even more difficult because there is no one to look after us.’ We have to rely on ourselves.’

She said that it is becoming more difficult because the couple themselves do not have good eyesight. ‘Initially, many people used to come to us to provide relief and food, but now no one looks back, instead they come to ask for money.’ The flood also washed away the red papers. What do we have left for the day?’ she said.
