The proposed Dadeldhura Medical College (Faculty of Health Sciences) under Sudurpaschim University has been running B.Sc. Nursing, B.Sc. Medical Lab Technology (MLT) and Bachelor of Public Health (BPH) programs in recent years. The college, which started admissions for the first time in 2080 BS, is currently running classes up to the second batch.

In the first batch, 8 out of 10 seats were admitted for the MLT program, while all 20 out of 10 seats have been admitted in nursing. 6 out of 10 seats are in lab and 5 out of 10 seats are in public health.

The Medical Education Commission determines the number of seats for each session after monitoring the physical condition, manpower and educational infrastructure of the college, said Dharmaraj Bhatta, associate professor of the college and program coordinator of the Faculty of Health Sciences. According to him, the process of admitting new students in these three faculties for the third batch is currently in the preparation stage.

Bhatta said that the ministry has informed that the number of seats could not be increased immediately as the financial burden of the government would increase with the increase in the number of students. According to him, the college had proposed 30 seats in B.Sc. Nursing for the upcoming session.

According to him, students from different parts of the country have come to study at Dadeldhura Medical College, not only from the Far West. He said that students have come from districts including Itahari, Kathmandu, Chitwan, Gulmi, Kailali, Kanchanpur.

In the programs being run by the Faculty of Health Sciences, 75 percent of the seats are available under scholarship (free of charge) and the remaining 25 percent seats are available for study by paying fees. Students are admitted for scholarships through a competitive selection process. According to Bhatta, this arrangement has been brought with the aim of providing easy access to higher education to students from economically weaker sections on the basis of priority.

Although the college has its own land, the necessary physical infrastructure has not been constructed. Currently, the teaching and learning work is being conducted in old buildings. The college administration has stated that there is no immediate problem in education due to the low number of students.

Although there is a government standard that the capacity of Dadeldhura Hospital should reach at least three hundred beds to completely upgrade Dadeldhura Medical College and start MBBS education, the hospital is currently operating with the approval of one hundred beds. Due to this structural limitation, the college has now had to focus only on undergraduate studies in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The Government of Nepal had decided to expand Dadeldhura Hospital as a medical college in 2078 BS. After that, the Faculty of Health Sciences was established under the Far West University and currently programs in Nursing, Public Health and Lab Technology are being run.

Locals also expect this college to provide higher health education and quality services in the Far West in the near future if proper infrastructure and budget are ensured.
