‘Out of the 667 prisoners in Kailali Prison, 665 escaped by breaking the gate on the day of the incident,’ jailer Sapkota said. ‘During the incident, one prisoner did not want to escape and remained inside the prison, while the other was undergoing treatment.’ According to him, as of Monday, 396 of the escapees and those arrested by security personnel have returned to the prison.

In the incident on the afternoon of Bhadra 24, a large group of protesters broke through the outer gate of the prison and entered the prison premises. According to a police security personnel at the scene, no one was injured in the incident as there was no clash between the prisoners who were breaking through the prison gate and escaping and the violent group of protesters who came from outside. "A vehicle in the prison was set on fire and completely damaged, while the scooter and bicycle of a police officer were also vandalized by the protesters.

At the time of the incident, 21 Indian prisoners were in the prison. 2 of them have returned to the prison, while 19 are still absconding, said Jailer Sapkota. He also informed that while a large number of prisoners escaped, the weapons of the security personnel were safe.
