Dhangadhi's practices in waste management are exemplary

Waste management, which has become a challenge in every city, is a collaboration between Pokhara Metropolitan City and Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City and the practice of Dhangadhi is considered exemplary.

Dhangadhi has imposed a ban on plastic that is thrown away after one use. Regarding waste management, during the exchange of experience of the presentation of the project held in Dhangadhi on Tuesday between the two local levels, the participating speakers emphasized on the need to create income-generating activities and jobs through proper waste management. 

Gopi Hamal, head of Dhangadhi sub-municipality, said that sanitation has been taken forward as a project of the municipality's pride. "Not roads, bridges, buildings, our pride plan is waste management and sanitation", he said, "We have given first priority to waste management at the local level, which is a low priority, and the annual budget and programs have been fixed accordingly." Mayor Hamal said that to prevent the spread of plastic waste, plastic that is thrown away after one use, including gutkha, has been banned. 

Ashok Awasthi, Environmental Officer of the sub-metropolitan city, said that preparations are being made to produce various products by processing waste from waste to bio gas production. 

He informed that ninety-five percent of the garbage comes from the household through sorting. Official Awasthi said that work has been started by making a separate structure for hospital waste management. A micro-classification center of waste is also in operation. 

In collaboration with the private sector, communities, schools  Social organizations have also been mobilized in waste management. Netra Timilsina, the facilitator of the green job creation project through the recycling and upcycling scheme operated in Pokhara Metropolitan City, informed about the project. 

He said that the observation visit was organized to exchange skills and experience between the local levels that have done remarkable work in waste management. Pokhara Metropolitan Municipality staff, project staff, representatives of various organizations including United Nations Development Program are participating in the observation tour.

Pokhara Metropolitan Municipality has conducted a 'green job creation project through recycling and upcycling' with the technical support of the Korea International Cooperation Agency and the United Nations Development Program.  Through the

project, the recycling industry based on circular economy systems instead of using and throwing practices  Emphasis is placed on installation.

It is believed that by promoting green jobs, it will help in reducing the pollution and negative environmental impact created by solid waste.  Facilitator Timilsina said that the

project is also conducting an awareness campaign in the community for waste collection, transportation and classification. The project has been conducting campaigns in 136 villages of Pokhara.
