The dam of Dhauliganga hydropower project in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand state of India has been opened since Tuesday morning. The district administration office, Darchula, issuing a notice on Monday, asked not to go to the banks of the Mahakali river and to be cautious as the gates of the dam will be opened from 6 am on Tuesday.
According to the letter sent by NHPC Limited and Dhauliganga Power Station to District Administration Office Darchula, the dam of the project will be opened from 6 am to 6 am on Wednesday . As the water level of Mahakali river will rise during the opening of the dam and for a few hours after that, caution has been requested by Assistant Chief District Officer Mohansingh Dhami. He said that according to the letter received from India, the dam is about to be opened for silt cleaning.
The flow of Mahakali is increasing around Darchula headquarters till 8 am. The flow of the river has not come to mention. Ganesh Dutt Badu, a resident of Khalanga, said, 'After 3/4 hours of the opening of the Dhauliganga dam, the flow of water in the river near the headquarters will increase significantly.' He said that now the flow of the river has increased a bit compared to other days. He said that after 9/10 o'clock the mentioned amount may increase.
Due to the fact that the flow and level of water in Mahakali which flows from Darchula to Baitadi, Dadeldhura, Kanchanpur towards India may increase, the local administration has requested not to go near the river and to be cautious.
