The golden cannon bird found in Shuklaphanta National Park has decreased this year. In the 5-day count from June 19 to 23, these birds were found in a lesser number than last year.
The golden cannon bird, which is considered rare in the world, has been counted jointly by Nepal Bird Conservation Association and Shuklaphanta National Park. In the count made in different grasslands of the park, 184 birds were found in 114 nests, 92 males, 69 females and 23 females could not be identified.
"Less birds have been found than last year, it has been seen that attention needs to be paid to the habitat and food management," Purushottam Wagle, conservation officer of the park, said, "The park will also do necessary work in this regard."
According to Hirulal Dagoura, an ornithologist of the Nepal Bird Conservation Association, 213 birds were found in 130 nests last year. Technicians have directly seen and counted the number of golden cannon birds by reaching different grasslands of the park. This calculation is also known as 'Opportunistic' method.
The golden cannon bird was counted in grasslands including Haraia, Andaiya, Lalpani, Mohanpur, Radhapur and Sundariphanta along with the huge Shuklaphanta grassland of the park . With technical cameras and binoculars made attractive, these birds were engaged in monitoring the birds and the environment around them with their nest.
The golden cannon bird, also known as the engineer bird, makes an attractive nest. It seems that many and sometimes only one/two nests are made in the same tree . This bird usually lives in grasslands. This bird, which is considered rare in the world, is found only in Nepal and India. Along with Shuklaphanta in Nepal, it was seen in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve in 2007 and in 2018 it was also seen in Ghodaghodi Lake. After that it was recorded only in Shuklaphanta.
'The number of this bird is decreasing every year due to the lack of proper habitat management, feeding problems and the use of pesticides,' said Dagoura, an ornithologist from the Nepal Bird Conservation Association, 'This year, it was much less than last year.'
The golden cannon bird builds two types of nests in the same place . A complete and regular cleaning . This is called an active nest . Another is incomplete and sometimes only comes to bow to the crow . Which is called passive nesting . Dagounra says that because the crow breaks the flowers from time to time and the male does not allow the female to sit peacefully, they make two types of nests.
Now is also the breeding time of the golden cannon bird . Counting is easy as both males and females are often found together around the nest during the breeding season . Its breeding season is from March to September .
