According to Bhatt, head of the health branch, sickle cell anemia is a genetic blood disorder in which the structure of the red blood cells found in the blood is abnormal. Normally, these cells are round and flexible, but in sickle cell anemia, these cells are crescent-shaped and hard.

Crescent-shaped abnormal cells get stuck in blood vessels and block blood flow to the patient  Pain has been observed. "Crescent-shaped blood cells are destroyed in a short time, causing anemia (fatigue, weakness) to the patient," he said. Sickle cell trait refers to the symptoms of sickle cell anemia. Sickle cell trait is not a disease in itself, but it can be diagnosed through a blood test. Sickle cell anemia is more common especially in the Tharu community. Sickle cell disease treatment services are available at Mahakali Regional Hospital Mahendranagar.
