Farmers of Tikapur municipality-8 Arunaphanta have been cultivating onions in the banks of the Karnali river. This year, around 50 farmers have cultivated onions in Bagar. Locals say that some farmers have been cultivating onions on the banks of the Karnali river for the past three years, but this year many farmers have cultivated onions.
As onion production is better in sand than in soil, the farmers of Fanta have said that they are going to cultivate onion in bagger. Local Sahi Bahadur Chaudhary, who has been cultivating onions in Bagar for three years, said that he planted 86 kilos of onion seeds this year.
"Last year three quintals of onions were produced by harvesting 20 kg of onions," Chaudhary said. "In the beginning, one or two of us did the farming, now the whole village is engaged in onion farming," Chowdhury said, "In the beginning, we should irrigate in the evening and morning, after growing, we don't have to work hard."
In the past, Indian traders used to cultivate gourds and melons there. Locals say that the Indian farmers stopped coming when the land was not cleared when they were cultivating onions. Ramdulari Chowdhury said that last year he planted 6 kg of berna and produced one and a half quintal more onions.
'Last year we planted 6 kg of onions, this year we planted 16 kg,' said Ramdulari, 'Last year we sold 20 kg of one quintal, we gave the rest to our relatives and ate them at home.' Thakulla said that he was wearing a 16 kg berna for the first time and said that he was going to experience it for the first time.
"When I saw that the farmers of the village planted it, I also cultivated it. I have to irrigate more," Thakulla said.
"We don't recommend doing agriculture in Bagar, but we need loose soil for onion cultivation," Chaudhary said. Local social worker Sher Bahadur Saud said that after the farmers of Fanta village increased their onion cultivation, the farmers came to see Bagar's onion cultivation.
"Nowadays, farmers from other places come to see this onion farming every day," Saud said, "if it succeeds, Karnali's bagar will not be empty in winter."
