Fraud is increasing in the name of taking people to Europe.

What you should know

Foreign employment fraud, which was centered in the Gulf and Malaysia, has shifted to European countries.

Despite the attraction of young people in European countries like Croatia, Romania, Poland, and Malta, manpower companies cannot meet the demand to take workers to these countries. Those who are running fraudulent businesses under the guise of individuals and consultancies are taking advantage of this.

Teknath Timsina of Dhankuta and Chandra Tajpuriya of Jhapa paid four lakhs each to agent Nuru Prasad Pathak, saying they would go to the European country of Romania. But after paying the money, the agent lost contact and they have come to Kathmandu. Both have filed complaints with the police and the Labor Department in the hope of recovering the trapped money. But neither of them knows how the trapped money will be recovered.

More than 2,000 complaints of fraud have been filed with the Foreign Employment Department in the last 6 months, of which 80 percent are personal frauds. During this period, complaints of fraud worth 1.42 billion have been filed. Workers are going to European countries for foreign employment more individually than institutionally.

Nepali embassies in the relevant countries should authenticate the demand letter to bring the demand in an institutional manner. But the embassies have not authenticated it saying that there is no clear instruction from the government. Brokers are taking advantage of this situation. And youths like Teknath and Chandra are falling victim to it.

According to the department's investigation officers, fraud has increased when guest houses, agents and educational consultancy companies try to send people illegally because licensed manpower companies are not involved. Although 10 to 12 people are filing complaints at the Foreign Employment Department every day alleging that they have been cheated at the individual level, the government is not able to manage it.

There are more than 36,000 cases of fraud in the Foreign Employment Department. However, due to the rapid leadership changes in the department and lack of priority, those cases are not being resolved judicially.
