49-year-old Bharatmani Tharu and his wife Gobri, 49, of Balapur, Gulria municipality-5, went to irrigate the fields in Gulria municipality-4, Tulsipur, on Wednesday afternoon with their two grandsons. The two grandsons were placed on a bed and water was applied during the Bharatamani Mass.
Gobri was picking greens growing in the field. Nearby, two grandsons, 9-year-old Arpan and 7-year-old Sirjan, were playing in the khatia.
Suddenly a leopard grabbed the child Sirjan and carried him to the corn field. Gobri ran after the leopard, screaming and giving up. As the man screamed, the leopard got scared and released the child Sirjan.
When she approaches her husband Bharatmani with the grandson she saved from the leopard in her arms, Bharatmani has already fainted from fear of the leopard. As the 'prey' in its mouth escaped, the nearby leopard was roaring in unison. The situation was dire. What to do now? They had to protect their infant grandsons, fainting husband and themselves from the leopard.
Gobri gathers courage again. She left the injured grandson with her unconscious husband and reached the house which is about two kilometers away, screaming for help. She called the people of that house and brought them. She saved everyone including herself.
The injured child is being treated at a teaching hospital in Nepalgunj. Gobri has developed a fever due to having to deal with the dire situation, shouting and running. She says, "I saved my grandson from the leopard by gathering courage."
Two years ago, in the evening, she also saved the cub that was being attacked by a leopard in the evening. "That courage gave me the strength to free my grandson from the mouth of the leopard," she says, "even when I sleep at night, the incident keeps coming to me."
According to the doctor, the injured child has a neck injury.
Bharatmani said that the grandson, who underwent surgery on Thursday, started eating from Friday morning. "With my wife's courage, we were able to save my grandson from the mouth of a leopard, I could not support the old woman even though I was suffering from asthma," he says.
Division Forest Office Chief Vijayraj Subedi says that 35,000 rupees have been given immediately for the child's treatment. "After bringing the bill, there is a provision that up to 5 lakhs can be paid for treatment," he says.
According to local Lal Bahadur Tharu, the leopard that attacked Sirjan killed a dog in the village that same evening. He said that he was afraid to walk because the attacks of leopards were increasing. "If humans do anything to wild animals, strict action will be taken, but if wild animals are harmed by humans, they have to bear it," he complained.
