The Valley Mayors Forum has said that the central government has thwarted the rights of the local level by deciding to close educational institutions on Sunday.
The forum's meeting held in Mahalaxmi Municipality in Lalitpur concluded that the government has taken an unconstitutional decision. The meeting has demanded that the federal government withdraw its decision to close schools on Sunday.
Mayors Forum Chairman and Lalitpur Metropolitan City Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan said that the government's decision has thwarted the constitutional and legal rights of the local level. Expressing dissatisfaction with the government's decision, he also warned of legal action if necessary.
He said that the government's unexpected decision to grant Sunday holidays has created a situation that will affect teaching and learning.
'The Education Act states that schools should be open for 220 days.' Accordingly, all schools have made their calendars, and when the Government of Nepal unexpectedly announced that Sundays would be a holiday, there will be no teaching and learning for about 190 days,' said Mayor Maharjan.
He also said that a decision will be taken from the full-fledged meeting of the Kathmandu Valley Mayors Forum and the matter will be taken forward.
The meeting also demanded that the government hand over the ownership and management of buildings under the local level to the local level. Mayor Maharjan informed that the meeting decided to draw the government's attention to the transfer of ownership of buildings related to ward offices, hospitals and social welfare to the local level.
