70 percent of the houses, huts and structures built illegally in the squatter settlement on the banks of the Manohara River in Bhaktapur were demolished on Sunday.

70 percent of the structures in the squatter settlement were demolished with the help of seven bulldozers from Kathmandu Metropolitan City from 10 am onwards.

The demolition of today's structures had to be postponed due to the hailstorm that followed, said Surya Bahadur Khadka, Chief of the District Police Range and Superintendent of Police, Bhaktapur. Informing that the structures remaining to be demolished today will be demolished tomorrow (Monday), he said that since 80 percent of the residents had moved all their belongings by yesterday, the remaining residents of the settlement also moved all their belongings today.

He informed that 2,000 security personnel, including 1,400 Nepal Police and 600 Armed Police, have been deployed in the squatter settlement from Bhaktapur for today. He said that all the structures will be demolished by Monday. Stating that the actual squatters who left the settlement from here were sent to Dashrath Stadium, he mentioned that from there they were sent to a holding center for food and shelter.
