The government has started evacuating settlements built on various river banks and risky public and government lands in the Kathmandu Valley.
The squatter settlements in Ward No. 9 of the Metropolitan City, Ward No. 9 of Gairigaun, Ward No. 31 of Shantinagar, and Ward No. 11 of Thapathali were evacuated using dozers on Saturday morning. According to the Secretariat of Prime Minister Balendra Shah, the Nepal Police and the Metropolitan Police Force directly assisted in the evacuation of the settlements by picking up and transporting the belongings of the locals. After the residents also expressed their solidarity with the government's steps and cooperated, the relocation of the Thapathali settlements was completed peacefully and amicably.
So far, 144 families living in Thapathali, Gairigaun, and Shantinagar have come in contact with the government. A press note issued on Saturday evening stated that search and rescue operations are also continuing to see if anyone is missing in the settlements.
The families who came in contact and were rescued were initially taken to Dashrath Stadium to collect their details. They have been temporarily accommodated in various hotels in Kathmandu. Similarly, household belongings have been safely stored at separate locations in the stadium and Radhaswamy Satsang Beas Nepal in Sundarighat, Kirtipur.
Meanwhile, evacuation of the settlements in Gothatar Buddha Chowk of Ward No. 8 and Manohara Tole of Ward No. 9 of Kageshwori Manohara Municipality has also begun. The Prime Minister's Secretariat has stated that the process has been stopped for today due to obstructions in that area.
