Kathmandu Metropolitan City has launched the ‘Vehicle Free Asan’ program from today to preserve the originality of the ancient urban settlement Asan.
Acting Chief of the metropolis Sunita Dangol informed that the program will be operated in the area from Kamilachhi (Kamalakshi) Chowk to Asan, from Bhotahiti Chowk to Asan, and from Mahabouddha to Asan. During this program, which will be operated every Saturday, vehicle entry will be prohibited.
The metropolis is continuously working to protect, enhance, and promote tangible, intangible, natural, and archival heritage within its geographical and administrative area. It is expected that the work done in this way will pass on Kathmandu’s cultural identity, traditional lifestyles, festivals, and customs to future generations.
Due to the pressure of human and vehicle movement, managerial challenges have recently increased in the inner urban areas of Kathmandu. KMC spokesperson Naveen Manandhar said that the program was launched because it has become difficult to continue cultural and social customs in their original form and has negatively affected the identity of Kathmandu.
On Saturday, social and cultural, indigenous knowledge and skills exhibitions, singing, playing and dancing activities will be held in the Asan area. Spokesperson Manandhar informed that the living tangible and intangible heritage in the area will be protected, preserved and promoted, and traditional religious, cultural, social and traditional business activities will be displayed and promoted.
During the program, vehicles will not be allowed to enter Asan from Kamilachhi (Kamalachhi) Singh Gate on the Jamal side. Similarly, entry will not be allowed from Bhotahiti Kalash Gate on the Asan side. Vehicle entry from Bir Hospital towards the Mahabodhi Stupa will be prohibited. Entry from Ganesh Temples located at Batu Ganesh and Bhonsi towards the Mahabodhi Stupa will not be allowed. Vehicle entry from Indrachowk will be stopped. Entry from Machhindra Wahal, Manas Gali will be stopped. From Gosif, it will be possible to go to Inbahal Ganesh Temple. Entry from Ganesh Temple towards Pilantu Gali will be prohibited. From Nhaketla, it will not be possible to go towards Asan. Entry from Jyatha Annapurna School towards Bhamulu Gali towards Kantipath will be stopped.
Vehicle owners will have to use an alternative route through this area. It is stated that visitors coming to Asan on Saturdays will have to park their vehicles at Dharahara Underground Parking, Jamal Wahal, Durbar High School and other designated places and enter Asan on foot.
