Kathmandu Metropolitan City has announced that it will construct a box culvert on the Tukucha River on the road section from Putalisadak to Ratna Park via Bagbazar. The metropolis has also stated that an alternative route will have to be used during the construction of the box culvert.

Sub-engineer of the Public Works Department, Deepak Bahadur Shahi, says that the hume pipe installed for water drainage at that place is old. He says, ‘The flow of water is stopped during the rainy season. A box culvert is being constructed to reduce the risk of possible flooding and erosion.’

Shahi said that the road will be completely closed after the culvert construction work begins. Shahi informed that he has coordinated with the Traffic Police Office to manage an alternative route for vehicles going to Bagbazar via Dillibazaar, Putalisadak Chowk and turning left at Ramshah Path from Putalisadak to Bagbazar.

For this, he said that vehicles coming from both directions can reach Kamaladi bend and turn left towards Kamaladi Ganesh Temple and Ghantaghar. It is said that the road section will be closed for two months after the work starts. The contract amount for this is Rs 5,772,694, according to the metropolis. It has also been stated that the cost estimate is Rs 7072,182. An agreement has been reached to complete the construction of the culvert by mid-Chaitum. According to the metropolis, the culvert will be 5 meters wide on the road side and 14 meters wide on the water flow side.

The iron bridge at that location was damaged along with its foundation by the Dhobikhola flood in 2080 BS, said Ward No. 11 Chairman Hiralal Tandukar. ‘Various agencies came to build the bridge. We had to build the bridge. So we said that whatever agency proposed, it would be done. But no one built it,’ he said, ‘After that, the ward was making a construction plan. Since it was said that it could be built from the central budget of the metropolis, the construction is going to be done through the same process.’

The metropolis has stated that the contract amount for it is Rs 22.123,899. Its cost estimate is 37.123 million 935 rupees. An agreement has been reached with the construction party to complete the work by mid-December 2083. The notice states that the length of the culvert will be 17 meters and the height will be 7 meters.
