What you should know

Police Circle New Baneshwor has resumed service from its own office in Tinkune. The service has resumed after the building, which was destroyed by vandalism, looting and arson during the protests on Bhadra 24, was reinforced.

After the building burned down, the police had been providing services from here from the old building of the Citizens' Investment Fund in Baneshwor.

The burnt building was repaired by locals. According to Ramesh Shrestha, coordinator of the building construction committee for the construction of the New Baneshwor Police Circle, the new 7-room building was handed over after the reinforcement work of an old building was completed. He said that the reinforcement of the remaining building will be done by Neupane Tower. 'We have spent more than 6 million rupees on a new building and reinforcement work,' Shrestha said, 'Various works including toilets, electricity, water have also been done. There is still a lot of work to be done.'

The detention cell is not yet operational as the building is under construction. Circle Chief DSP Hari Khatiwada informed that the arrested persons have been kept in the Koteshwor and Kathmandu police premises. According to him, it will take a few days for the service to resume in the old style.

The protesters had even beaten up the police here. They had also pelted stones at the police who had entered the river to save their lives. After the police left the post, more than 60 detainees, including those arrested on charges of raping a 13-month-old girl, escaped.

The New Baneshwor Circle covers wards 10, 31 and 32 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City as well as wards 7, 8 and 9 of Kageshwori Manahara Municipality. Kandaghari and Koteshwor divisions are under this circle. On 23 and 24 Bhadra, 465 police offices across the country, including the police circle in New Baneshwor, were attacked and damaged. Of these, 118 police offices were completely damaged. Of these, the most damage was in the Kathmandu Valley.

The police have data on vandalism, looting and arson at 97 police offices in Kathmandu district alone during the protests on Bhadra 24. Along with looting police weapons, the protesters also burned police uniforms and personal belongings in the barracks. Police vehicles, motorcycles, computers and documents were also destroyed that day.

Other offices whose buildings were burnt are also providing services from various subordinate offices. According to the data of the District Police Complex, the police division Sankhu, police post Syuchatar, police posts Mulpani, Boudhanath Stupa, Birendra Chowk (Kandaghari), including the temporary police posts Sundhara and Paropakar posts, have been operating from nearby subordinate offices after the damage.

The police circles have made alternative arrangements until the old buildings are repaired. The services are being operated from the Dharamshala near the entrance of the Police Circle Gaushala Pashupatinath Temple and the Cultural Building of the Police Circle Janasewa Ward.

Police officers in the circle say that problems have arisen as various branches, including the case branch, promotion branch, and special branch, are now operating from two/three rooms and tents.

On 24 Bhadra, protesters killed 3 policemen in Kathmandu. Sindhuli Police Assistant Inspector Malan Rai, Kaski Police Assistant Constable Amrit Gurung, and Darchula Police Constable Uttam Singh Thapa died after being beaten up by protesters.
