Kathmandu Metropolitan City has launched the 'Silver Volunteer Program' with the main objective of fully utilizing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of experienced and mature citizens over the age of 45 for social and urban development.

KMC has introduced this program to provide citizens who have gained long experience in various fields with the opportunity to contribute to the development of society and the country even after retirement, informed Bivek Bastola, secretariat member of the KMC Urban Planning Commission.

Regarding the ‘Silver Volunteer Program’, Planning Commission Secretariat Member Bivek Bastola says, ‘Have you completed 45 years? Have you retired from a job or business? If you are thinking of contributing something to society rather than resting after retirement, then come and join hands in the development of the metropolis together.’

It is stated that through the program, it is possible to work together with KMC in areas such as education, health, sanitation, environment, administration, urban development, heritage conservation.

The metropolis has called for applications as per the ‘KMC-Silver-Volunteer-Procedure’. As mentioned in the procedure, citizens who have met the qualifications can apply through an online link.

KMC has set the following time limit for the program - Nepali citizen/non-resident Nepali/foreign citizen who has obtained permission as per prevailing law, who has completed 45 years of age and has not exceeded 74 years of age.

Similarly, KMC has stated that the candidate should have worked in a government, private or non-government organization in any field for at least 20 years and have acquired subject-specific expertise.  Must be ready to serve for a minimum of five hours a week for a period of one year, must be physically and mentally capable of working, willing to volunteer completely, and must be ready to go and work in the areas within KMC designated by the committee.

Similarly, the candidate must be able to perform the assigned responsibilities honestly and have the ability to reap rewards, not be convicted of any criminal charges, not be disqualified under the prevailing law, and meet other qualifications specified by the committee. According to the metropolis, this program will, on the one hand, help mature citizens utilize their experience in nation building, and on the other hand, provide satisfaction and opportunities to experienced citizens through social service.
