Official Ghintanghisi dance was performed today in Bhaktapur to mark the start of Gaijatra. The Gaijatra dance is celebrated with great pomp on the next day of the month of July Shukla Pratipada i.e. Janaipurnima.
In Bhaktapur, it is believed that the Gaijatra started with the official Ghintangghisi dance performance on the afternoon of Janaipurnima.
On the day of Gaijatra, a festival of religious, cultural and historical importance, which is celebrated in memory of relatives who died within a year, Guthi Sansthan worshiped Natyeshwari in Sukuldhoka and performed Ghintanghisi dance from Bahtol in Darbar Square.
The dance started from Bhaktol in Bhaktapur and went around the Durbar Square, Balakhu Ganesh, Chochhen, Bhulachhen, Mahalakshmi Sthan, Thalchhen, Gachhen, Sujmari, Tachpal, Gomari, Sukuldhoka, Tamari, Nasmana, Banshgol, Itachhen and Khasma and reached Sukuldhoka.
Ghintanghisi dance is danced by the participants holding sticks in their hands to the combined beat of Dha baja, Thabaja, Dhimay baja. In the Gaijatra of Bhaktapur, which is celebrated till Krishna Astami day, there is a tradition of performing various satirical dramas and cultural dances along with Ghintanghisi dance from different villages every evening. Gaijatra is celebrated in Bhaktapur for eight nights and nine days.
