Risk of infection is high, Kathmandu Metropolis urges to drink only boiled water

What you should know

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has asked consumers to use only boiled water, saying that the risk of water-borne infection is high during the dry season. As water is available everywhere during the rainy season, the producer company can sell it against the standard, Kampa asked the consumers to use only boiled drinking water.

Nurnidhi Nyupane, Head of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Department of Kampa, stated that Kampa is regularly monitoring the drinking water production, transportation and distribution system to reduce water-related risks and stressed that consumers should only drink boiled water.

He informed that 159 jars containing drinking water against the standards were destroyed during the monitoring conducted by KAMPA last June alone. During the monitoring, KAMPA said that by deploying teams at various points of water intake, they are regularly monitoring the vehicles and jars of businessmen who provide treated water services to meet the needs of the city dwellers.

During monitoring, the head of department Neupane mentioned that Kampa destroyed the jar found against the standard during the monitoring. Kampa has also requested everyone not to use opaque jars that are crushed, broken and the water inside cannot be seen.

Neupane informed that water producing companies that have been found to be deficient have been instructed not to sell processed jars against the standards, to keep labels with clear details on the jars, and to carry the company-issued bill of lading in the vehicle.

Similarly, Kampa has prepared to test samples of drinking water by reaching the community level for cholera control. Rishi Bhusal, 'focal person' for the prevention and control of Kampa epidemic disease, informed that orientation program is being started in each ward of Kampa along with water sample testing.

According to him, since the monsoon has arrived earlier this year than the previous year and it is raining as usual, KAMPA is about to start work for the control of cholera patients. In previous years, cholera patients were found in Balkhu, Kalimati, Tankeshwar areas.
