The Bagmati Pilgrimage which takes place at a distance of 18 Kosh from Katuwal Dah to Wagdwar, the source of civilization of Kathmandu Valley, will not be held this year.
The journey, which was stopped for 40 years after Bagmati was polluted, took place in 2075 and 2076 when Dr. Pradeep Dhakal was the member secretary of the Pashupati Area Development Fund.
It has been a tradition that Madan Bhatt, the priest of Pashupati Agam house, does all the legal work to be done on the journey. The 17-day journey was completed in seven days in 2075. In the year 2076, a nine-day journey was made. Even though the fund said that every year since 2077, the day will be increased to 17 days, the trip has stopped for seven years.
Locals complain that the Bagmati pilgrimage, which was stopped in 2077 due to the Corona epidemic, could not take place in subsequent years due to lack of funds. Ishwarman Rajbhandari, Acting Head of Fund Culture Division, says that there is no preparation for the Bagmati Pilgrimage this year as well.
During the journey from Katuwal Dah to Wagdwar, there is a tradition of bathing, worshiping and darshan at 165 pilgrimage places on the banks of the river mentioned in Himavatkhand.
This journey is believed to have been conducted by Nemuni. During this process, Bagmati Tantra Sadhana will also be performed at different places, said Bhatt Madan Bhatt of Agam Ghar. According to the fund, it is believed that the pilgrimage will create awareness to keep Bagmati clean, but once the pilgrimage itself is stopped, there will be more problems in purifying Bagmati.
