Kathmandu Metropolitan City said that out of the 945 vehicles tested for pollution, 515 (54 percent) were found to be in violation of the pollution standards.
KAMPA said that in the test of the condition of vehicles running on the road, which started on December 29, 44 out of 249 petrol powered vehicles and 471 out of 696 diesel powered vehicles were found to be against the prescribed standards.
According to Sarita Rai, Head of Kampa Environment Department, Kathmandu Metropolitan City has issued 'Environment and Natural Resources Act, 2077', 'Pollution Control Standards, 2081', 'Garbage Collection and Transportation Procedures, 2081' to maintain urban cleanliness by improving the environment. By implementing the provisions of these laws, the pollution of public vehicles running in the city has been tested.
In 'Pollution Control Norms, 2081', standards have been set by keeping separate indicators for the manufacturing period of petrol and diesel vehicles. According to which, the carbon monoxide content of four-wheeled vehicles produced up to 1980 should be a maximum of 4.5 percent (by volume). Vehicles manufactured in 1981 or later should have a maximum of three percent (by volume) of carbon monoxide.
In the case of three-wheeled vehicles, the amount of carbon monoxide in vehicles produced up to 1991 should be a maximum of 4.5 percent (by volume). In the case of two-wheelers, the amount of carbon monoxide should be maximum 4.5 percent (by volume). For all types of diesel vehicles manufactured up to 1994, smoke density should be a maximum of 75 Hertz Smoke Unit (HSU). For vehicles manufactured in 1995 or later, the maximum smoke density of the vehicle should be 65 Hertz Smoke Unit (HSU).
So far, petrol and diesel vehicles passing through Thamel, Maitidevi, Chawhil, Khushibu, Balaju, Ratopul, Kuleshwar, Kamalpokhri, Vanasthali, Koteshwar, Darbarmarg, Chakrapath Balkhu, Babarmahal, Teku, Sukedhara, Sinamangal, Panipokhri and Jamal have been tested. The vehicles that fail in this way include buses operated for public transport services, school buses, buleros operated by government offices, trucks carrying goods, etc.
