Pedestrians on the road in front of the Padmakanya Multipurpose Campus in Bagbazar, Kathmandu, have started using the technology to turn on the traffic lights by pressing a button.
From Wednesday, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has put Pelican Crossing into operation on the road in front of Padmakanya. Jagatman Shrestha, traffic expert consultant of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, said that, keeping in mind the safety of pedestrians, Kathmandu Metropolitan City has so far put pelican crossings into operation at 36 places.
He said that the concept of this technology was introduced to reduce road accidents and protect passengers. According to him, during the pelican crossing, as soon as the passenger presses the button, the vehicle will stop for some time and the passenger will be able to cross with confidence.
Keeping in mind the safety of passengers, the Metropolitan Municipality is going to start the technology of lighting traffic lights in other places as well, he said.
This is called button crossing. It won't work unless the button on it is pushed. After the push it will work in its own time. It is not safe because of random crossing now. Now we have it in 36 places. After pushing on it, the vehicle stops for a certain time. And can cross the road with confidence. "Kathmandu Metropolitan Corporation has started doing these works keeping in mind the safety of passengers," he said.
