Despite continuous campaigns by security agencies to control drug trafficking in the border district of Parsa, its turnover has not decreased.

Data from the last three fiscal years show that drug-related cases, the number of arrests, and the quantity of drugs seized remain high. According to the data from the District Police Office, Parsa, 97 drug-related cases have been registered till Jestha of the current fiscal year 2082/83 alone. 136 people have been arrested in these cases. Among those arrested are 107 Nepali men, 28 Indian men, and one Indian woman.

In the last fiscal year, 116 cases were registered, and 153 people were arrested. Among those arrested were 100 Nepali men, 6 Nepali women, 45 Indian men, and two Indian women.

The highest number of cases was 220 in the previous fiscal year. That year, 305 people were arrested. Among those arrested were 263 Nepali men, 10 Nepali women, 27 Indian men, and five Indian women.

A comparison of three years shows that the number of people involved in drug trafficking has not decreased significantly. Although the number of cases and arrests has decreased slightly in the current fiscal year, the police estimate that it may increase further by the end of the year, as the data is up to Jestha.

Looking at the quantity of drugs seized, it seems that Parsa is being used as a main route for smugglers. In the previous fiscal year, 467 kg 54 grams of marijuana was seized, while in the last fiscal year this quantity had increased by almost three and a half times to 1,561 kg 370 grams. By the end of Jestha of the current fiscal year, 1,648 kg 786 grams of marijuana have been seized. This has even surpassed the record of the previous year.

A significant amount of hashish is also being seized. In the previous fiscal year, 91 kg 184 grams of hashish was seized, which increased to 625 kg 952 grams in the last fiscal year. In the current fiscal year, 273 kg 29 grams of hashish have been seized.

Brown sugar seizures, on the other hand, have been gradually decreasing. In the previous fiscal year, 766 grams 693 milligrams were seized, in the previous fiscal year 384 grams 310 milligrams were seized, and by the end of the current fiscal year, only 100 grams 280 milligrams were seized.

Opium seizures have also fluctuated. Opium, which was seized in the previous fiscal year 154 grams, had increased to one kilogram 490 grams in the previous fiscal year. This drug has not been seized in the current fiscal year .
Tablets and capsules such as Phenergan, Diazepam, Nurphine and Bunorphine used through injection, as well as Tramadol, Nitravet and Nitrazepam, are also being seized in large quantities.

In particular, the seizure of more than 289,000 Tramadol capsules in the previous fiscal year and more than 234,000 capsules in the current fiscal year is considered a sign that the form of drugs is expanding from marijuana and hashish to medicinal drugs.

Due to the open border in the district, gangs are active in importing drugs from India to Nepal and transiting Nepal to other districts. Although most of the people arrested are porters or small businessmen, the police have not been able to reach the main gangs. The fact that almost half of the prisoners in Birgunj jail are on drug charges also shows that the drug problem is becoming serious in Parsa.
