Dhanusha police have arrested a man on charges of holding a 14-year-old Dalit girl hostage for a week and raping her.
A Dalit girl from Kshireshwor Municipality-9 in Dhanusha was lured to work in the fields by a local woman, Khushbu Devi, and handed over to Jayaram Mahato. According to Dhanusha police, Mahato took the girl to the banks of the Basaniya river and raped her. When the girl, covered in blood, started screaming and resisting, Mahato kept her at the house of her brother Ganga Mahato in Aurahi. When the girl's condition began to deteriorate, Mahato brought her to Janakpur with Khushbu's help.
‘The girl was held hostage and raped in a house in Janakpur’s Piradi Chowk,’ said Dhanusha Police Spokesperson and DSP Ganesh Bahadur Bam. ‘On the fourth day of being held hostage, the housewife informed the police.’ According to Bam, the police team that arrived immediately found the girl unconscious.
‘The girl’s mental state was not normal. Her genitals were stitched,’ DSP Bam said. ‘It seems that the girl was made unconscious by giving her various drugs and intoxicants. The girl is not yet able to speak. She is being treated in a safe house.’
The District Police Office, Dhanusha, has arrested Mahato and registered a case on charges of holding the girl hostage and raping her. According to Dhanusha Police DSP Bam, a search is underway for others who were instrumental in the kidnapping and rape of the girl.
