Relatives have accused the death of a 14-year-old boy staying in the school hostel of being 'suspicious'.
Dharmendra Kumar Sah, 14, who was staying in the hostel of the Phuleshwor Public English Boarding School in Khadak Municipality-7, Saptari, died on Saturday. The hostel operator is saying that the boy committed suicide. Relatives of the deceased have claimed that the incident is 'suspicious' because they informed the family members only late.
Mamta Sah of Khadak-9, Lalpatti, had admitted her son Dharmendra to the Phuleshwor Public English Boarding School in Kalyanpur, Ward 7, 7 years ago. Dharmendra, who was studying in class 7 at the hostel, died last Saturday afternoon.
Mamta has been fainting occasionally since she received the news of her son's death. ‘On Saturday morning, around 10 am, the school principal Shobha Chaudhary told her that her son was using his mobile phone and that students were not allowed to use mobile phones here,’ she said. ‘Shobha had called her to come to school quickly saying that she had confiscated her mobile phone. But she could not go immediately as she was busy with household chores.’
Then, at around 11 am, Shobha’s husband Dhirendra called her from the school’s caretaker Bhola Mandal’s mobile phone and told her to come to Dwarika Hospital. ‘When she reached the hospital, Dhirendra told her that her son had been found hanging in the hostel. To hide the incident, everyone took her to the hospital without informing anyone,’ said Mamta.
When Shobha was called again within 10 minutes of receiving the call from the school, Mamta said that she could not be reached. ‘When he didn’t answer the phone, I called Ravina Chaudhary, who was working in the hostel kitchen,’ she added. ‘I had also received a reply from Ravina that Dharmendra was staying in the hostel premises, but later I got the news that her son had died.’ Mamta complained that they had taken him to the hospital without informing them or the police after the incident, and that there was a delay in the investigation.’
Dilip Prasad Sah, uncle of the deceased Dharmendra, said that the CCTV was also turned off since 9:30 am before the incident. ‘When we reached there, they initially lined up and said that the CCTV was off. Looking at the CCTV, it seems that the CCTV was switched off before the incident,’ he said. ‘The place where the nephew is said to have hanged himself is also very high. It doesn’t look like he could have hanged himself.’ He has urged for initiatives for justice.
After the incident, Shobha and her husband Dhirendra had cut the rope and taken Dharmendra to the hospital. Only then did they inform the family and the police about the incident. Even though a post-mortem was conducted at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, a complaint has not been registered as the report has not been received.
Inspector Sanjeev Bogati of the Area Police Office, Kalyanpur, said that they will proceed as per the report on the post-mortem. ‘The family of the deceased has already questioned those who raised doubts in the complaint. After the post-mortem report comes, we will proceed as per the law.’
School administrator Shobha claimed that the allegations against them were not true and claimed that Dharmendra committed suicide. Her husband Dhirendra said that the child was found hanging with the door of his bedroom closed. ‘I was not there at that time. "After the student informed us, we hurriedly broke down the door and cut a trap in an attempt to get the child treated and took him to Dwarika Hospital in Kalyanpur," he said. "However, when the doctor declared him dead on arrival at the hospital, I was heartbroken."
