The threat of wild elephants and tigers has been increasing in Thori Rural Municipality of the district recently. Locals have been forced to live in fear after the movement of wild animals near human settlements increased.
Locals said that wild elephants have been regularly seen in the area around Hanumannagar, Thori-2, in the last few days. The elephants, which usually come out of the forest towards Chitwan National Park at night and come close to human settlements, have created an atmosphere of fear among the locals.
According to local Chiranjivi Sapkota, although the elephants have not yet entered the settlement, they have come close to human settlements, so there is a growing fear that they could cause major damage at any time. ‘It is not the crop season now, but the locals are very scared after the elephants started appearing near the settlements,’ he said, ‘If they come during the crop season, there could be major damage.’
The Thori region is geographically surrounded by Chitwan National Park, Parsa National Park and India’s Valmiki Tiger Reserve. Locals say that this is the reason why there is a lot of movement of wild animals here. Not only elephants, but wild animals such as chital, wild boar, and nilgai have been damaging the crops of local farmers every year. According to local farmers, it is not often that they are able to fully harvest the crops they have planted, including rice and corn. When wild animals enter the fields and destroy the crops, farmers are unable to get a return on their investment.
Meanwhile, locals said that the fear of tigers has also increased in the area around the postal road in Thori-1 Gautamnagar East for the last one month. A CCTV camera installed by local residents has also captured a tiger moving around the postal road.
After seeing the tiger's activity, locals have started to be afraid to go out of their homes in the evening. Locals are especially worried about the safety of children and livestock.
Locals are concerned that human-wildlife conflict will increase further if proper management is not done in time. Now, with the increase in elephant and tiger activity, the residents of the Thori area are forced to live in a constant atmosphere of fear.
