Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital, Rajbiraj, has been unable to manage six abandoned bodies for the past four months. According to the hospital, the lack of identification of the bodies brought for postmortem has led to problems in management.

The bodies have been kept in the hospital's morgue. According to Manoj Dev, head of the hospital's medical record medico-legal section, they have been sent for postmortem and viscera examination. He said, "There is no place to store more bodies due to lack of management of abandoned bodies."

He said that the bodies have started rotting due to the power supply problem. "Despite repeated requests to the concerned bodies for the management of the bodies, there has been no response," he said. Two of the bodies were found in Kanchanrup Municipality, one in Rupani Rural Municipality, one in Rajbiraj Municipality-6, one in 14 and one in Ward No. 4.

It is alleged that the police did not pay attention to the management of the abandoned bodies even though they were brought to the hospital for postmortem.

According to the unidentified and abandoned bodies management guideline, 078, there is a body management committee at the district level. The committee, chaired by the chief of the District Police Office, is said to make necessary arrangements for the funeral of such bodies in coordination with the local level.

The police, however, have said that they have ignored the management when they have written to the local level. The hospital administration says that the police have been saying that they are ‘coordinating with the local level’ despite repeated requests. Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Awadhesh Kumar Mishra said that when the police were last requested, they responded by arranging the management within 3-4 days.

District Police Office spokesperson DSP Dambar Bahadur Puri said that they have already written to the local level for the management of the abandoned bodies and some arrangements have been made. ‘We are coordinating for the management of other bodies,’ he said.
