Death after beating on suspicion of mobile phone theft: Two accused released on bail

What you should know

Two accused in the death of 19-year-old Mukesh Kumar Yadav after he was beaten to death on charges of stealing a mobile phone in Boriya, Rajbiraj Municipality-16, Saptari, have been released on bail. Another minor accused in the incident has been released in the custody of his guardian.

The order was issued during the hearing of the case by a single bench of Saptari District Court Judge Kishor Ghimire on Monday and Tuesday. The accused, 35-year-old Sarokumari Sah of Rajbiraj Municipality-16 Boriya, have been given a bail of Rs 200,000 and 25-year-old Santosh Kumar Raut of Boriya have been given a bail of Rs 100,000, while the minor, 18-year-old Rabindra Thakur of Boriya, has been handed over to his guardian, said DSP Dambar Bahadur Puri, spokesperson of the District Police Office.

Sarokumari had arrested Mukesh Kumar on November 19 on charges of stealing a mobile phone and tied him to a mango tree with the help of a neighbor and beat him severely. Suspecting that Mukesh had taken the stolen mobile phone to his maternal uncle's house in Bishnupur Rural Municipality-4, Kankatta in the district, they tied him to an e-rickshaw and took him there.

When the mobile phone was not found there either, they became even more angry and tied him to an e-rickshaw and beat him up again before returning him to the bag. However, they could not take Mukesh out of the house that day due to fear that he would be beaten again and could not take him to the hospital. The next day, Mukesh also suffered from fever and was brought to Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital, Rajbiraj for treatment only on November 5. He could not be treated as there was no intensive care unit (ICU) there. Mukesh was referred to Chinnamasta Hospital in Rajbiraj in the afternoon and died during treatment.

As his post-mortem report was not clear, his viscera has been sent to the National Forensic Science Laboratory, Khumaltar (Lalitpur) for examination. However, the report has not come yet. The victim's family is disappointed that the accused was released before the report comes.
