The rape incident of a girl in Bardibas-12 has come to light after a week. It has been revealed that after the police arrested the accused during a discussion program being held in the village, the villagers surrounded the house and threatened and enticed them to settle the incident in the village.
The victim said that her neighbor Rajendra Mahato raped her after she left school last Friday and went to work in the field, saying, "I love you, I will give you money." Meanwhile, the girl's mother, who had gone to the field with manure, heard her crying and went to see her. She said that Mahato ran away and brought her daughter home with him. The victim's mother said that Mahato's men came to the house that same night, threatening her not to tell anyone about the incident because if she spread rumors about it, everyone's respect would be lost and that if she did, she would be killed.
She said that when she tried to file a complaint with the police several times, they threatened to kill her if she left. The victim's mother said that he blocked her path several times to settle the matter, sometimes threatening her and sometimes offering her money, and sometimes offering her Rs 600,000 to settle the matter.
The incident came to light after the police arrested Rajendra Mahato of Bardibas-12 at 2 pm on Thursday while he was being pressured by around 20/25 people to reach an agreement. The Bardibas District Police Office arrested Mahato on Thursday and extended his remand for 3 days and kept him in custody, according to the complaint filed by the victim.
The police arrested Mahato after receiving information that he had tried to reach an agreement by pressuring the victim during repeated discussions, said DSP Shailendra Kumar Bhatta, spokesperson of the Mahottari District Police Office. The police said that the arrested Mahato was given an extended remand and underwent a health check. Bhatta said that other action will be taken after the health check report comes and the incident is being investigated.
The victim alleges that Ward Chairman of Bardibas-13, Laxman Singh, tried to settle the incident within the village. The victim's side has said that along with the ward chairman, other dignitaries of the village have also pressured him not to take the incident outside the village. Ward Chairman Singh said that he was not involved in the incident and that he had no knowledge about it.
Singh, who reached the Area Police Office after Mahato was arrested on Thursday, said that he had not reached the police office regarding the incident but for other reasons. The victim said that along with Singh, Ramesh Mahato, former chairman of the management committee of Janata Secondary School, Dandatol, Bijalpura, Bardibas-12, and a dozen villagers surrounded the house and put pressure on him at any time.
