A young man who had a love marriage with a non-Dalit girl in Siraha has been detained by the police. Amrit Kumar Mochi, 21, of Sukhipur Municipality-5, has been illegally detained by the police since Friday night.
Amrit was taken into custody by the police at 11 pm last night from the bridge over the Kamala River on the border of Siraha and Dhanusha. He was taken to the Area Police Office, Bandipur from the wedding hall by a team from the Area Police Office, Golbazar.
He was kept in custody there and was handed over to his relatives only on Saturday evening after the initiative of local leaders. Along with Amrit, his wife Kosika Kumari Sah, 20, of Dhangadhimai Municipality-2, was also taken into custody by the police. She was kept in a safe house in Golbazar overnight and has also been handed over to Amrit's family.
They, who have been in love for the past year, were taken to the Janaki Temple in Janakpur for their wedding on Friday by relatives and villagers. However, when the wedding was about to take place, a group of 15-20 people including the girl's father Fulgen Sah arrived and started an argument. The police took them under control and took them to the District Police Office, Dhanusha.
After they showed their age documents to the Dhanusha police and told them that they had married willingly, the police handed them over to the young man's family on Saturday.
However, Amrit's mother Rukmini Mochi accused the Siraha police of kidnapping her son and daughter-in-law. She claims that the police forcibly took them under control with the intention of freeing the son and daughter-in-law who had married willingly.
'The Dhanusha police released us after we showed them our citizenship.' Instead of taking them home safely, the police here detained my son after they reached Siraha,' Rukmini told Kantipur, 'It seemed that the police were trying to free my son and daughter-in-law under their influence, perhaps because we are Dalits.'
Siraha police, however, claimed that the young man and the young woman were kept under control for peace and security. 'If they were released, there could have been a dispute between the two parties, so we kept them under control,' said DSP Ramesh Bahadur Pal, spokesperson for the District Police Office, Siraha, 'There is nothing else like that.'
Abhash Guru, the custodian of the Madhesh Library, said that it is illegal for the police to detain anyone like a criminal without any reason. He said that it is condemnable to detain them when the police should make arrangements to ensure the safety of citizens at home if they feel unsafe.
Even though they have been handed over to the family, they have not yet been able to leave the Golbazar Police Office. According to the young man's neighbor, Ram Udgar, a group including the girl's father has surrounded the gate of the police office.
