The cholera vaccination campaign in Parsa has achieved 90 percent success after the second campaign. Jaymod Thakur, an officer at the District Health Office, Parsa, said that 90 percent of the target population was vaccinated under the campaign that concluded on Thursday.
The campaign, which was resumed from Kartik 13, ended on Thursday.
The campaign conducted before Chhath had achieved only 84 percent coverage. The coverage has now increased by another 7 percent to 90 percent.
Thakur said that the coverage is similar in almost all the local levels of the district. He said that awareness is the main reason for the 10 percent not getting vaccinated. ‘Some people did not have the awareness that vaccination is for their own safety,’ he said. ‘Three refused to get vaccinated despite repeated requests.’
During the campaign conducted before Chhath, only 547,311 people were vaccinated out of a total target of 652,129 people. Of the 14 local levels of the district, the highest coverage was achieved in Jagarnathpur Rural Municipality at 94 percent and the lowest in Jira Bhawani Rural Municipality at 78 percent.
93 percent success was achieved in Chhipaharamai Rural Municipality, 91 percent in Bindabasini Rural Municipality, 88 percent in Sakhuwaprasauni Rural Municipality, 86 percent in Thori Rural Municipality, 85 percent in Patervasugauli and Dhobini Rural Municipality, 84 percent in Parsagardhi Municipality, 83 percent in Pokhariya Municipality, and 82 percent in Birgunj Metropolitan Municipality.
Thakur said that it will take some more time to get the final results of the coverage of the campaign, which is currently being conducted for the second time.
To control the cholera outbreak in Birgunj, the Ministry of Health and Population had requested the vaccine from the International Coordination Group on Immunization Management (ICG). The campaign was conducted in Parsa and Bara under the leadership of the Family Welfare Division with the technical support of the World Health Organization and UNICEF.
The Euvicol-S vaccine is 82 percent effective two weeks after administering a single dose. The vaccination campaign was launched after the cholera outbreak that has spread to various areas of Parsa, including Birgunj Metropolitan City, was not completely controlled since last Bhadra 6. The vaccination campaign is believed to play an important role in protecting the residents of the affected areas from the disease and preventing the epidemic from spreading to other areas.
A total of 1,894 human resources, including 1,544 female health volunteers and 350 health workers, were mobilized in the campaign.
So far, 1,567 diarrhea and cholera patients in Birgunj Metropolitan City have come to various hospitals in Birgunj for treatment, of which 227 have been confirmed to be infected with cholera. In addition, 18 people have been confirmed to be infected with cholera in Pokhariya Municipality. Tests have not found cholera bacteria in water collected from various places in Birgunj. The source of the cholera outbreak in Birgunj has not been found yet.
