The Nepali Congress is set to vote against the vote of confidence that Madhesh Pradesh Chief Minister Jitendra Sonar (Sonal) is set to take today.
The Congress parliamentary party has decided to vote in opposition and remain as a strong opposition, informed Congress Chief Whip Kumar Kant Jha. Whip Jha also complained that the Janmat Party had betrayed them. ‘It was like getting engaged to one person and getting married to another. This was not good,’ he said, ‘that is why we have decided to vote against the government.’
Chief Minister Sonal is going to take a vote of confidence today as per the constitutional provision to take a vote of confidence within 30 days of being appointed as the Chief Minister. Sonal was appointed as the Chief Minister on Asoj 29 with the support of 56 MPs from five parties. However, before that, the Janmat Party had toppled the government led by its own party, Satish Singh, in collaboration with the Congress and the UML. After that, the Janmat Party had also started its homework to form a government led by the Congress. Congress leaders are criticizing the Janmat Party, targeting the same issue.
Sonal needs a majority of the total provincial assembly members to get a vote of confidence. There are currently 104 members in the 107-member provincial assembly. 53 votes are required for a majority.
Currently, the government includes 18 members from JSP Nepal, 11 from Janmat (two of whom left to join Janaswaraj), 9 from Maoist Center, 8 from LSP, 7 from CPN (Unified Socialist), 1 from Citizens' Liberation Front and 1 from Nepal Federal Socialists. Two MPs from the ruling party, Abhiram Sharma and Saroj Singh Kushwaha, are suspended. Apart from these, Citizens' Liberation Front and Nepal Federal Socialists are also supporting the government. Both parties have one member each in the provincial assembly. Accordingly, Chief Minister Sonal is likely to get a vote of confidence.
The largest party, UML, the second largest party, and the Janaswaraj Party, which was formed by breaking away from Janmat, are preparing to sit in the opposition. Janaswaraj and RPP MPs said they would remain neutral.
