One and a half months after the spread of cholera infection, a vaccination campaign against cholera has been started in Parsa from Sunday.
The vaccination campaign was started after the outbreak of cholera spread in different areas of Parsa including Birganj Metropolitan Municipality from last August 6 was not fully controlled. Jaymod Thakur, Public Health Officer of Health Office Parsa, said that the vaccination campaign will play an important role in protecting the residents of the affected areas from disease and preventing the epidemic from spreading to other areas.
Chief District Officer Toynarayan Subedi officially launched the campaign by taking the first vaccine in a program organized at the Parsa premises of the District Administration Office. After taking the vaccine, Prazia Subedi urged people of all age groups to take the vaccine to keep themselves and their families safe. Dr. Abhiyaan Gautam, Chief of Child Health and Immunization Branch under Ministry of Health, Dr. Manoj Kumar Gupta, President of Nepal Medical Association Narayani Branch, Superintendent of Police of Parsa, Sudeep Raj Pathak, Superintendent of Armed Police, Puranchandra Bhatt, Assistant Chief District Officer Suman Kumar Karki, Spokesperson of Parsa Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police Kishore Lamsal, Secretary of Journalists Federation, Parsa Vijay Chauhan and others took the vaccine in the
program.
Dr. Gupta said that there are no side effects of the vaccine and everyone above 1 year of age can safely take the vaccine. Likewise, Dr. Gautam said that the goal is to complete the campaign at all target local levels in Parsa and Bara before Tihar.
The campaign started at 6 local levels including Birgunj Metropolitan Municipality on Sunday and is being conducted at other local levels from Monday. This vaccination campaign will start from October 29th in neighboring Bara. Out of the 16 municipalities of Baraka, this campaign is being conducted in Kalaiya, Jitpursimra, Parwanipur, Prasauni, Feta and Vishrampur which are connected to Birgunj Metropolitan Municipality.
The Ministry of Health and Population requested vaccination from ICG, the International Coordinating Group on Immunization, to control cholera spread in Birganj. Under the leadership of the Family Welfare Division, the campaign was conducted in two districts with the technical support of the World Health Organization and UNICEF.
Dr. Vivek Kumar Lal, head of the Family Welfare Division, said that after two weeks of administering one dose of Euvicol-S vaccine, it is 82 percent effective.
Campaign till October 2
In the campaign which will be conducted from October 26 to October 2, 652 thousand 129 people of Parsa district will be given Euvicol-S vaccine. The vaccine will be given to everyone above 1 year of age. To make the campaign effective, 1,950 vaccination centers have been established in 14 municipalities of the district. The centers include local municipality offices, ward offices, government and private hospitals, community and private schools, colleges, government offices, non-governmental organizations, temples, mosques, churches, monasteries, bus parks, Nepal-India border crossings and industrial factories. In the
campaign A total of 1,894 human resources have been mobilized, including 1,544 women health volunteers and 350 health workers. 1 million 18 thousand 100 doses of vaccine have been brought for Parsa and Bara.
Cholera infection was confirmed in three people for the first time in Birganj on 6th August. So far, 1,567 people suffering from diarrhea and cholera have come for treatment at various hospitals in Birgunj, of which 227 people have been diagnosed with cholera.
Moreover, cholera infection has been confirmed in 18 people in Pokhria Municipality. From the tests conducted so far, no cholera bacteria have been found in the water collected from different places in Birgunj. Even after a month and a half, the source of the infection has not been found.
