Lumpy skin disease has been observed in Chaupaya in Birgunj Metropolitan City and surrounding areas for one and a half weeks. Vijay Kumar Yadav, deputy animal service technician of Parsa Veterinary Hospital and Animal Services Expert Center, said that since one and a half weeks, farmers around Birgunj have been bringing lumpy skin affected quadrupeds to the center for treatment.
Lakshman Sah of Birganj Manpa-13 brought heifers, Akash Patel of Birganj-14 brought buffaloes, Lakshman Sah of Birgunj-24 brought cows, and another farmer from Maniari of Birgunj-22 brought a heifer for treatment. So far, this disease has been observed in the calves of most of the farmers.
He said that even though he had heard that the disease had spread to other local levels of the district, no official data had come. Animals suffering from this disease have symptoms such as high fever, lethargy, not eating, sores up to 5 cm deep on the skin all over the body and later the sores burst, if the sores are not treated, worms come out of the sores and swelling of the legs.
This disease is transmitted from one quadruped to another by parasites such as flies, mosquitoes, wasps, etc. This disease is more likely to spread especially through saliva and parasites in wounds. In the
district, 2 years ago, i.e. in the last week of 2080 Baisakh, there was an outbreak of Lumpiskin in Thori Rural Municipality for the first time. After that, it spread throughout the district and spread to all 14 local levels. The outbreak was brought under control towards the end of August of that year.
2 years ago when the outbreak spread, 36 quadrupeds including 27 cows, 7 calves, 1 bull and 1 buffalo died from this disease. Apart from this, 1 thousand 801 quadrupeds were affected across the district. Among them were 1,327 cows, 472 calves and 2 buffaloes.
700 cows were affected in Parsagadhi Municipality, 285 in Jirabwani Rural Municipality, 60 in Chhipharmai Rural Municipality, 40 in Kalikamai Rural Municipality, 35 in Jagarnathpur Rural Municipality, 20 in Pakahamainpur Rural Municipality.
In the same year that the outbreak spread, the Center administered the Lumpyskin vaccine to around 16,000 cattle. In the district, the outbreak of this disease was seen more in advanced breed cows and calves and bulls born from those cows.
This disease is transmitted by a virus called capripox. On 26 Baisakh 2080, it was seen simultaneously in Jhapa, Ilam, Udaipur, Sankhuwasabha and other districts. Even in 2077, this disease was observed all over the country, and it was brought under control at that time. At that time, this disease was observed for the first time in Morang district.
In 2012, this disease was first seen simultaneously in India, Bangladesh and China.
