So far, about 77 percent of paddy has been planted in the eight districts of Madhes province which are affected by drought. According to Director of Agriculture Development Directorate Jitendra Yadav, the highest planting rate was 95 percent in Bara, while the lowest planting rate was 61.5 percent in Mahottari.

Of the total five lakh 42 thousand 581 hectares of cultivable area of the province, three lakh 72 thousand 645 hectares are planted with rice, but so far two lakh 85 thousand 335 hectares have been planted.

According to him, although there is not enough rain, the planting area has increased through boring. There has been some relief when farmers planted paddy by irrigating from Gandak canal in Bara and Parsa, Koshi in Saptari, Bagmati in Sarlahi and Rautahat. However, there was a problem in Dhanusha when the Kamala river dried up.

It is estimated that up to 80 percent planting will be done in the state this year. Director Yadav said that it is estimated that the total rice production will decrease by 27 percent due to late sowing.

22 thousand 52 farmers across the province have applied after the state government announced immediate relief to farmers under the underground irrigation management support program for dry and drought-affected areas.

Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh said that the Madhes state government is waiting for the decision of the federal government for irrigation management support.  He said that even though the provincial government allocated a budget of 180 crores to the farmers, it was not enough.
