Jarnadan Singh Chhetri, Minister of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperatives of the Madhesh State Government, has said that farmers can reap huge benefits by cultivating sugarcane on a large scale through agricultural cooperatives.
He said this while addressing an interaction program with stakeholders for the promotion of commercial sugarcane cultivation organized by the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperatives in Madhesh Province on Friday.
"Farmers can get huge benefits by cultivating sugarcane on a large scale through agricultural cooperatives," he said, "We cannot increase the production of sugarcane or any crop unless we cultivate sugarcane or any other crop under the Chaklabandi system or on lease in four/five hundred bigha fields."
He also said that the Madhesh state government has brought compensation, subsidy, food compensation etc. for the first time through the Agriculture Act.
In a different context, Minister Singh said that the current problem of underground water resources in Terai is not deep boring and said that irrigation facilities can be available up to Parsa Bara by draining the water of Narayani river in Rapti. He said that the federal government should allow the private sector to import fertilizers to solve the problem of lack of fertilizers for the farmers.
Secretary of the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperatives Dr. Umesh Dahal said that the ministry is committed to solving the problems of sugarcane farmers. He said that declining sugarcane cultivation is a matter of concern and said that the government is serious about increasing its cultivation.
Asarfi Sah, a farmer of Parsa, said that the idea that rice is more beneficial than sugarcane is developing among farmers, so there is a possibility that sugarcane will not be cultivated in the future. He said that the government should immediately bring a plan to reduce the cost of sugarcane cultivation and give more profit to the farmers.
Farmer Arun Kumar Yadav of Rautahat said that the government should pay attention to this as mechanization is becoming more expensive. He said that they are facing problems in sugarcane cultivation due to poor quality of sugarcane seeds.
Amarnath Yadav, a farmer of Siraha, demanded that the government should provide alternative irrigation facilities to the farmers as the biggest problem for the farmers is irrigation. Hari Gautam, President of Virganj Industry and Commerce Association, said that there is no alternative for farmers, industrialists and the government to unite to promote the sugarcane crop. He emphasized on the need to produce sugarcane seeds in the country through tissue culture method. Stating that Madhesh can be made the capital of sugar, he said that in order to arrange the sugarcane needed by the 8 sugar mills in Madhesh province, all industries should be guaranteed a certain amount of farmers' fields.
Rajesh Kedia, the director of Indu Shankar Sugar Industry, emphasized that if there is no good relationship between the farmers and the industrialists, the sugar mills cannot operate, and that a harmonious relationship between both parties is necessary.
