Keeping in mind the sensitivity and security of women prisoners, the need for 'female friendly' prisons has been repeatedly raised. But there is no such facility available in Siraha jail now.

Jail Administrator Suvodh Kumar Mahato said that the lack of a separate structure for women prisoners, lack of necessary structures in the constructed building and the overcrowding of the current jail made this problem more complicated.

According to him    There is no separate type of prison to keep female prisoners and prisoners. The women prisoners here have been transferred to other places since a month ago.

A separate residential building for women prisoners, adequate and safe toilets and bathrooms, child protection rooms for women with babies, secure meeting rooms and facilities to ensure privacy are considered necessary.

Inadequate building, incomplete plan

Under the budget of the Madhes state government for the financial year 2081/82, a new building has been started for women prisoners at a cost of Rs. 6 million, but it is still incomplete. Moreover, there is no women-friendly structure in that building. Jail administrator Mahato said, "Until the compound wall, drinking water facility, toilet, safety tank, sentry post, meeting room are completed, the building will be useless."

What is more worrying is that the windows used in the building are made of glass, which is considered very risky from the point of view of security. Mahato says, "By breaking the glass, there is a possibility of unwanted activities and reducing various incidents. Why and how it was used, I am ignorant. I have only been here for a month and a half as the chief."

dilapidated structure and inmates beyond capacity

Siraha's main prison was built in 2028, which has not been upgraded till date. Old structures, inadequate facilities and high number of inmates have made the situation even worse.

Although the capacity of this prison is only 150 people, currently 442 prisoners are kept here. On July 4, 13 people were injured in a clash between inmates regarding the appointment of internal administration inside the prison. Prison administrator Mahato said that they are currently being treated in Kathmandu.
