Until two decades ago, there was only a crossroads on the East-West highway section - Bardibas. It was difficult to live here because of the water problem. Bardibas has turned into the main highway to reach Kathmandu from the east after the completion of the short-distance BP highway connecting Kathmandu.
Drug trafficking has recently grown as a crime here . As the bus stop turns into a city through Chowk Bazaar, Bardibas is also becoming a "transit point" for transporting drugs from India to Kathmandu and smuggling mountain ganja to India .
A police source claims that a godown has been kept near Bardibas to deliver cannabis and drugs brought from India to Kathmandu. DSP Vikas Bam of Bardibas Police Office says that schools and common houses in Bardibas are under the grip of drugs.
"There are reports of well-known school students consuming marijuana, marijuana being readily available in stores and 10/20 kg of marijuana being kept in homes," DSP Bam said, "There is a strong network of drug smugglers." During our regular checks and patrols, marijuana has been recovered from four-wheeled vehicles. He said that there is a need for an awareness campaign to protect Bardibas who are under the grip of drugs. He said that the school arrested students with marijuana and handed them over to their parents, as well as conducting classes for the arrested businessmen and smugglers to leave the business.
Due to the open border between Nepal and India, the Nepalese youth go to India to consume banned drugs and bring them into Nepal for sale, and the police claim that the cannabis produced in Chure area is being stored in Bardibas and being smuggled to India. Scorpio, two cars and a motor cycle carrying ganja to India from Gaushala, Ramgopalpur and Jaleshwar crossings from Bardibas have been seized by the Mahottari police along with porters.
Last Friday, 31-year-old Rangalal Sengtan of Bardiwas-11 was arrested with 40 kg of ganja kept in 8 bags from a white color EV car numbered Ba 01-030 Ch 7805 coming from Maisthan to Gaushala . On Friday, 26-year-old Deepak Dahal of Dolakha Baideshwari Rural Municipality-6 was arrested by the police with 107.9 kg of ganja from the trunk of BAC 8739 car at Ramgopalpur Chowk, Bardibas Jaleshwar Road, Ramgopalpur Municipality-5, Mahottari.
46-year-old Shivnarayan Chaudhary of Bardibas Municipality-13 and 40-year-old Ajmairi Khatun of Manrashiswa Municipality-10 were arrested with 20 kg of ganja kept in a motorcycle number 2-02-001 P 6662 coming from Bardibas towards Jaleshwar. The police came east on the east-west highway in front of Shubh Swastik Hospital located in Bardibas Municipality-1, 11 Ch. 35-year-old Lalbabu Sah of Sarlahi Hariwan-5 and 21-year-old Abhishek Periyar of Hariwan-3 Buddhachowk have been arrested with 158 kg of ganja in 30 bags from a white colored Scorpio number 3494.
In the last four days, the Mahottari police, on the basis of a secret information, arrested with marijuana being taken from Bardibas to India using a motorcycle in Jaleshwar, a car in Ramgopalpur and Gaushala Road, and a Scorpio in Bardibas. Ganja is being smuggled through Mahottari border every day. The amount of marijuana seized by the police after receiving information about smuggling is increasing year by year.
DSP Shailendra Kumar Bhatt of the district police office said that 12 quintals of 96 kg of gauze were seized and 10 cases were registered against 12 people in the fiscal year 2080/081 in Mahottari. According to the Madhesh Police Office, more than 135 quintals and 69 kg of ganja have been recovered from 8 districts of the province in the last 10 months. In the last fiscal year 080/81, more than 85 quintals of 39 kg and in 079/80, 56 quintals of 83 kg of ganja were recovered.
Heramb Sharma, SP of District Police Mahottari, said that the cannabis seized in Mahottari was packed in Makwanpur. "Ganja smugglers seem to have made Bardibas of Mahottari a center for smuggling to India by making small vehicles, easy roads and short stations," he said.
